A corner for those touched indirectly by breast cancer

It's often easy to forget that breast cancer doesn't just affect the person who has been diagnosed with the disease but also those who love and care for that person.  Admittedly these friends and relatives don't have to undergo treatment and aren't fighting a life-threatening illness but they are affected in many ways and often don't get enough support themselves.

The idea of this page is to allow those people to tell their story, discuss their worries and fears and to share help and tips that may make the journey just that little bit easier or more bearable.

If you have anything that you would like to say from the point of view of a relative, friend, carer or someone who's been touched by breast cancer without being diagnosed themselves then please contact us at Breast Cancer Corner and we will share your message.

Moral Support My mother has breast cancer. Oh my, it was so difficult to take good care of her. You know I love my mother and she means a lot to me and to the whole family. But she just changed. After learning that she had cancer, her attitudes towards us and towards in life just changed negatively. The optimistic and self-driven woman who I know was gone…she is so bitter and always scold us her children. My father told us to be just patient on her because she is sick.

RE:Moral Support My sister who is a breast cancer survivor was used to be like this when she was undergoing chemotherapy. It was so difficult dealing with her. Of course, we understood her situation and we just remained patient on her “tantrums.” Hang on there!

RE:Moral Support There are really people who hide their emotions in order not to be weakened further and not to effect sympathy from others. I am lucky to have a very strong wife despite of her breast cancer. She is so focus in her road to recovery. And, yes, I know she will be treated and soon to be at the road of recovery.

RE:Moral Support I am just wondering, though, if such “personality change” is also an effect of the medicines she’s taking and the radiation she has to take from her chemotherapy. My mother used to be a sweet and nurturing person…now, there is no day that she gets angry.

RE:Moral Support I am a little bit lucky. My mother, who is a breast cancer survivor, was such a very obedient patient during those times when she underwent radio therapy.

RE:Moral Support Breast cancer, or any other form of cancer, is really threatening if one discovers that she has it. But it is also threatening among family members who has a member of the family with breast cancer. Yeah, in a way, it can unite the family…but, sad to say, there are other families that broke apart because of this.

RE:Moral Support Whatever. All I know is that there are many people who died because of breast cancer.

Breast awareness and checking

It’s vital to check your breasts on a regular basis and become ”breast aware”.  Most women are not invited for routine mammograms until they are 50, therefore we must rely on ourselves to do regular checks.
